What to know about armadillos
Armadillos are well-known for their distinctive, armored appearance and their tendency to dig holes in search of food. These animals are common across much of South America and have expanded as far north as the Southeastern United States. The nine-banded armadillo is the only species found in the U.S., and it feeds on a variety of insects, including fire ants, termites, grubs, and spiders—helping control pests that can damage crops and homes.

However, problems arise when armadillos dig on private property, creating holes that can be expensive to repair. Their burrowing can damage lawns, gardens, and even building foundations. Always take care when digging in gardens or handling soil in areas frequented by wildlife to avoid exposure to harmful bacteria. Keeping a safe distance from armadillos is crucial, especially if they are seen in your yard.
