Between 1,000 and 2,000 species of rodents exist on every continent around the world except Antarctica.  All types of rodents share the characteristic feature of large, ever-growing front teeth.  Most are small mammals that feed primarily on plants, though some rodents will eat practically anything.  In places where humans live, rodents are often considered pests because they contaminate food, damage houses, and spread diseases.
